PS3 Firmware 2.40 is Now Available!
Posted by: JT in Announcement, News, PS3, TechnologyThe update includes the much sought-after in-game XMB (so you can play custom music from your library and interact with the XMB without quiting your game) and trophy support. Of course these features have been available on the xbox360 since launch, but it’s nice to have these options on the PS3, knowing how it adds to the palyability and entertainment of the console.

Okay this Trophy system sounds cool and all but if the only thing you get for gaining trophies is bragging rights then that takes a lot of the incentive out of it for me. Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t Xbox Live have a system that gives you points for achievments you can use to purchase stuff at the online store? It would be nice to have something like that. And it doesn’t have to be crazy type shit like am/fm stereo walkmans, whopper phones or Huffy bicycles, but maybe XMB themes or Avatars or in-game items, like clothing in GTA or maybe paint jobs or graphics in racing games. I mean I know the game developers would have to be on board but they are going to have to be anyway if they use the trophy system in their games period.
I’m just saying it would be nice if I could sit down and while playing GTA or Burnout for a few hours a week, get some trophies. Then maybe in a few weeks have enough to get some swag that could customize my system or gameplay more.

You are mistaken regarding the achievements on xbox live. They are also worth absolutely nothing, in fact, less than nothing since they are “points” based. There’s no real guideline for developers to determine how many points to assign to a task, or how many points warrant what difficulty of task. You end up with anyone who can play a season of Madden with hundreds more achievement points than someone who happens to play games that don’t reward as many points for their achievements. Oh, and Live arcade games have an extremely lopsided difficulty to achievement point ratio. Playing a season of Madden might get you 600 or 1000 achievement points, but the most difficult achievements in something like geometry wars might only get you 100 or so.
I think trophies for swag is a great idea that sony could implement, but that’s obviously not the case in the foreseeable term.
